However, companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of communicating their sustainability activities in a credible and effective way. It is becoming increasingly difficult to talk about products in the context of sustainability and the risk of warnings and high fines is omnipresent. This situation is exacerbated by the Green Claims Directive, which is due to come into force as early as 2024. According to a [survey by McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/de/news/presse/2021-05-17-pm-nachhaltiger-konsum), more than 60 percent of consumers attach great importance to the sustainability of brands when shopping. A recent ruling by the Karlsruhe Regional Court illustrates the growing awareness of authentic sustainability communication. A large retail company was prohibited from advertising products as “climate neutral” or “environmentally neutral” after Deutsche Umwelthilfe successfully took legal action against such claims. Jürgen Resch, Federal Managing Director of Deutsche Umwelthilfe, sees this ruling as an important step in the fight against greenwashing. The future Green Claims Directive, which is expected to come into force in 2024, will further tighten the requirements.
